My Favourite Video Game: Ultimatium

Matti P: I started playing games in late eighties, my parents bought Commodore 128 (which is still running btw and will be used on our next album!!!). Since then, I’ve been playing, not daily, but at least weekly.

During 90’s, when computer games really started to evolve, we got PC as well, I think it was 166mhz Pentium-machine. At that time, my gaming really kicked off. With games like Warcraft, Fallout 2, Civilization 2, time flew by.

As much as I’d like to say that Fallout 2 is my favourite video game, and all the Fallouts ever since, it’s the Sid Meier’s Civilization-series that I’ve been most into. Civilization 2 was big hit for me and I really enjoyed finishing it again and again.

Civilization 3 was bit weird, I did play it too, but I think not as much as Civ2, if I correctly. But then came Civilization 4, that was as much of a hit for than the Civ2 was. I spent countless hours scheming against other nations, waging war, or building peaceful nations. Both vanilla version but also a lot with total conversion mods.

Then next for me came obviously Civ5. It redefined the series completely and it was a lot to take in, moving from grid based to hexes. And your units have two moves minimum? That was a shocker. Civilization V is clocked at 1146.6 hours on my steam … And then came the sixth…

2365.1 hours and still counting! All that time I could have practices my keybording, but no, Civ6 took my time. Where Civ5 was “practising” for the hex & new features, Civ6 took that all and made it much better, with district-features really being the welcomed surprise. Although that game has it’s flaws, diplomacy and economy being little too simple at the times, AI now really having proper tactics other than “I kill you in first 20 rounds”, that is a game I just keep returning it, when all the other games fail to amuse me. There’s nothing more satisfying than starting totally random game, with next to highest difficulty and start building your nation. Challenging myself with what leader/nation I’m given, the starting position etc and make my tactic as I go along. With all the DLC, bringing in a lot of extra, that game is simply my favourite video game of all times. Until the seventh? Who knows, no pressure dev team.

Honorary mention goes to Civilization: Beyond Earth, that was also a great game, based on Civ5.
Best “Acting” / writing: Cyberpunk 2077 (latest album ‘Virtuality’ takes some influences from this).
Best music: Civilization 4.

Tomi Viiltola: I started playing with Atari 2600 “Darth Vader” Model at 80’s. My favourite game for it was “H.E.R.O.” Then I moved on to Amiga 500 and “Barbarian” (Psygnosis) was best thing ever. After that I dabbled with Pc (Compaq, 486) for a little while ‘cos of “Doom” and “Ultima Underworld”. Then I saw the light and moved back to consoles and ordered Super Famicom from Japan and played Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy III and Super Street Fighter II to death (not literally). Then I got Playstation 1 and 2 (and also Sega Saturn) and after that bought Xbox 360 which was awesome, ‘cos of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and my all time favourite game…”Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning ” everything in that game spoke to me and is power metal fantasy in videogame form!

Nowadays I use Game Cloud to play games…and it’s awesome! Happy gaming and keep on rocking! Cheers, Tomi.  P. S. There are too many good games that I have played and didn’t mentioned here but it would have taken way too many paragraphs for me to write.

As for the rest of the band, Harri’s favorite game is Super Mario 3 and Matti Auerkallio does not play that many games!
